Google AI mode for business: cited is not recommended

Learn more about AI implementation in Luxembourg.

Most advice about Google AI Mode stops at "get cited". That is the wrong finish line for a business. A citation is a small link chip under an answer; a recommendation is your company's name in the sentence the buyer reads. The two behave differently, and you can measure both yourself in an afternoon.

I run AI search visibility work at 20 More, so we test our own site the way we test clients' sites: the same five buyer questions, every week, in a fresh browser session on google.lu. Below are the raw results for three consecutive weeks of October 2026, what Search Console shows for the same period, and the changes that turn a citation into a recommendation.

See where you stand first: our free AI Search Snapshot runs your own buyer questions through AI answer engines and shows who gets named instead of you. Request it on the AI search visibility page.

What is Google AI mode, and is it available in Luxembourg?

AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search (it opens with the udm=50 parameter) where Gemini answers a question in prose, accepts follow-up questions, and shows the pages it drew on. It is different from AI Overviews, the summary box that appears above normal results for some queries.

The rollout in our markets came in stages:

MarketAI Mode availableSource

For a Luxembourg business this matters twice: your clients search in French, German and English, and AI Mode now answers in all three.

What did we measure on google.lu?

Each Sunday in October 2026 we put the same five questions to Google AI Mode on google.lu, in a fresh session, and recorded whether 20 More was cited as a source, named in the answer text, and which sites were cited instead. The five questions mix languages and intents: a Peppol supplier question (EN), an e-invoicing "what to do" question (FR), an e-invoicing deadline question (DE), an AI consultant funding question (EN) and "agence IA Luxembourg" (FR).

Three patterns held every week:

  1. The same question was never cited: the French "facturation électronique Luxembourg 2028 que faire" prompt cited accountancy firms, the Chamber of Commerce and the government portal, and never us. We have a French tracker page on the dates, but no French page answering what to do.
  2. Named answers came from pages framed as a service. The two answers that named us as a provider pointed at our Supplier File Health Check (for the Peppol question) and our French homepage (for "agence IA"). Our long-form guides were cited, but as background.
  3. Other engines were harder. Over the same three weeks Perplexity cited us in 2 of 15 answers, and ChatGPT named us once in the one week it could be tested. Google AI Mode is currently the most open door.

A caveat on method: 15 answers is a small sample, AI answers vary between runs, and our five prompts are about our own market. Treat the numbers as a pattern to test on your own questions, not as a benchmark.

What does search console show for AI mode?

Google counts AI Mode impressions and clicks inside the normal "Web" search type of the Search Console Performance report, without a separate filter (Search Engine Journal). So you have to find AI traffic by the shape of the queries.

On our own property, over the 90 days to 27 October 2026, queries shaped like AI conversations (full questions, follow-ups such as "what about Luxembourg", or one-word replies such as "yes") produced 131 distinct queries, 778 impressions and 1 click. The largest single one, "which payroll provider should I use to pay employees in Luxembourg?", showed our payroll article 157 times at an average position of 3.6, with no click.

That is the commercial meaning of "cited but not named": your page is being read inside the answer, the buyer gets what they need, and nobody visits. If the answer does not say who to call, the citation earns you nothing.

Why does AI mode cite you without recommending you?

Because a citation and a recommendation answer different questions. AI Mode cites a page when it uses a fact from it. It names a company when the question asks who and a page states, clearly and credibly, that this company does that thing for that market.

Our informational guides answer "what is a Peppol ID" or "when does e-invoicing start" very well, so they get cited for facts. They rarely say, in one sentence near the top, "20 More checks Luxembourg supplier files for Peppol readiness". The Health Check page does, and that is the page that got us named.

Language is the second reason. AI Mode answers a French question mostly from French pages. If your French content is a translation of your English article, it answers the English question. We measured this gap in detail in AI search in Luxembourg: your language picks the winner.

How do you get your business named in Google AI mode?

Seven changes, in the order we would make them. None of them is a trick; each one makes your site a better answer to a buyer's question.

#ChangeWhy it works in AI Mode
1Write down the 10 questions a buyer asks before calling a provider, in each language you sell inYou cannot be named for a question you have not identified
2Give each question a page whose first paragraph answers it and states who does the work, for which marketAI Mode lifts self-contained passages; the provider sentence is what gets quoted
3Use question-shaped headings with a direct answer under eachMatches how follow-up questions are asked
4Keep your company name, services and location identical across languages, your Google Business Profile and directoriesAI systems resolve "who is this firm" from consistent entity signals
5Earn mentions on sites AI Mode already cites for your topic: chambers, sector associations, local press, comparison directoriesIndependent pages are how an AI system confirms what your firm does; your own site is only one voice
6Write native French and German pages for the questions people ask in those languagesA translated page answers the wrong question
7Re-run the same prompts every week and log cited vs namedAI answers drift; without a fixed prompt set you cannot tell progress from noise

Steps 1 to 3 are the same structure we use for every article on this blog, and they are the core of our GEO guide for Luxembourg firms. Step 5 is the slowest and the one most firms skip.

How can you test your own AI mode visibility this week?

You need a browser, a spreadsheet and 30 minutes:

  1. Write five questions a real buyer would ask, at least one in each of your sales languages. Include one "who can…" or "which provider…" question.
  2. Open a private window, go to google.lu, type the question and switch to the AI Mode tab.
  3. For each answer, record three things: are you cited as a source, are you named in the text, and which sites are cited instead.
  4. Repeat every week for at least four weeks, with the same wording.
  5. For every question where a competitor is named and you are not, open the page AI Mode cited for them and compare it with yours: does it answer the question in its first paragraph, and does it say who does the work?

The "cited instead" column is the most useful one. It is a free list of the sites that shape your market's AI answers, and the first place to earn a mention.

Is AI mode worth the effort for a Luxembourg SME?

If your buyers research before they call, yes. AI Mode is currently the AI engine where small, specialised Luxembourg sites are cited most often: in our log, far more often than in Perplexity. Being named there is achievable with content you control. And because Google is still counting AI Mode inside normal search data, the work also improves your ordinary rankings.

If your clients only ever find you by referral, it can wait. But check one thing before deciding: search your own company name in AI Mode and read what it says about you. If it is wrong or empty, that is the first page to fix. For the wider picture of where AI search fits in next year's plan, see the 7 AI moves for 2027.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Google AI mode and AI overviews?

AI Overviews is a summary box shown above normal results for some searches. AI Mode is a separate tab where Google answers the question in full, takes follow-up questions and lists its sources. Both draw on indexed web pages.

Does search console show AI mode traffic separately?

No. AI Mode impressions and clicks are counted in the normal "Web" search type, so you have to identify AI traffic by the shape of the queries, such as full questions or one-word follow-ups.

How long does it take to get named in Google AI mode?

New pages that answer a precise question can be cited within weeks of being indexed. Being named as a provider usually takes longer, because it also depends on mentions on other sites. Measure weekly and judge progress over a quarter.
